Chris is an accomplished engineering leader out of retail tech and adtech, including some hyper-growth environments. He searched right through the aftermath of the 2022 and 2023 tech layoffs, the worst market for engineering leadership in a decade, and it took about a year.
We tracked 341 applications and 34 interview processes, a conversion rate of roughly 10%, across around 180 individual interview conversations.
Both numbers matter, because they count different things. Thirty-four is how many distinct roles reached interview. One hundred and eighty is how many actual conversations those turned into, since a single process runs through a recruiter screen, a hiring manager, a panel and often a final round. That is the same grain our public interviews list uses: one row is one posting, not one round.
We put this one up because it was hard
A year is nobody's favourite number to see in a case study, and that is exactly why Chris's story is here. A search like this tests your persistence as much as your positioning, and leaving it out would paint a false picture of what a bad market does to good candidates.
“Even with the interviews being landed, the conversations happening and falling apart.”
Interviews landing and then dying at the late stages, again and again over months, is the real texture of a downturn search. None of it was about his qualifications, and it is why the conversation count runs so far ahead of the offer count.
What the conversion rate is worth knowing
At roughly 10%, Chris was converting at around three times the wider market's rate of about 3 interviews per 100 applications, and it still took a year. Both of those things are true at the same time, and the honest read is to hold them together. Better conversion shortens a hard search. It does not turn it into an easy one.
The value of a service that does not stop
The engagement ran for as long as the search did. That is really the whole point of a placement guarantee in a market like that one. When a search drags on, the cost of that sits with us. It does not land on the candidate as a renewal invoice at the very moment they are most worn down.
