How this client recovered from an offer being pulled and landed the remote role he wanted

This client had an offer pulled before he even started. A company put it in writing that they would not be taking it forward, after he had already accepted. It is about the worst thing that can happen in a search, and it does happen.

Seven interviews later he landed the remote role he had been aiming for, doing work closely aligned to what he was already doing.

Applying alone produced nothing

When I was applying, I never really got any calls or anything for myself.

The first pass was wrong, and we fixed it

This is not the tidy version anyone would script, and that is what makes it worth hearing.

There were initially a few jobs which were not according to what I really wanted to work on. But that's given. You guys understood that, and then changed. So I guess your process really worked out, and I started getting calls.

A search that is aimed slightly wrong at the start and then corrected is just a normal search. That is how it goes when you are calibrating to a real person.

What he says about the low points

He is more clear-eyed than most about the emotional shape of a search, and his answer is refreshingly unmotivational.

Patience is the key. When I didn't progress in some of the interviews I was also feeling down. I think keep practising.

And on the interview reps themselves:

The first interview I gave, I didn't even really handle the recruiter well. But the next interview I knew exactly what to talk about, and how confident to be.

The outcome

It's a remote position, which I always wanted.

The role closely matched what he was already doing, and that was the whole point. He wanted the same work, just without being tied to a location.

I can definitely say that I wouldn't have been in this position without you guys.

The search in numbers

  • An accepted offer formally withdrawn before starting
  • 7 interviews, then the remote role he wanted
  • Level: Director. Function: IT and Enterprise Systems
